Allergies, of course, have been around since the dawn of mankind. The sheer number of cases today, however, makes it a modern ailment. Every year, medical practitioners of many countries report an increase in consultation numbers. A better awareness amongst the population and/or an increased willingness to consult a professional may explain some cases, but not all.

So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that between 20 to 25% of a population in the developed world suffers from some kind of allergy. A small percentage of sufferers even have to fear for their lives, as the allergic reaction doesn't just produce tears in their eyes, it may also involve the heart and lungs with life-threatening consequences.
