When we talk about the impacts the drought has on the population of Australia, we think of reduced agricultural production and financial losses, of water shortage and suffering cattle and sheep, and of wilting crops and barren soil. But do we consider the mental and physical health? Probably not, because we consider us as being a modern society where such impacts don’t occur. Our mental image is of poor people in drought-stricken African countries.

A recent study conducted by the University of Nebraska, US, proves otherwise: drought-related health problems also occur in the so-called western societies. In general, there are five categories that have the greatest impact: 1) poor hygiene, 2) water-borne diseases, 3) infectious diseases, 4)respiratory illnesses, 5) mental health problems and stress.
